Scope and Contents: The collection includes various image formats documenting campus locales, people, and events including school activities, plays and musicals, organizations, athletics, homecoming, and other typical campus scenes. While predominantly photographs, the collection also includes negatives, slides, contact sheets, digital images, glass plate negatives, daguerreotypes, tintypes, and other formats from the 19th century to the present.

The photographs in the collection are arranged by subject with some individual photographs described within this arrangement. Consult a staff member for details and assistance. Images from the collection are not available online at the present time.

Photographs should be requested by subject heading (example: Buildings and Grounds--Wren Building) and then accession number (example: P1988.101) when applicable NOT box and folder numbers.

Brief descriptions of a small portion of the images in this collection:
Acc. 1988.081 includes a set of mounted photographs dating from the 1950s and 1960s, ranging in size from 6.5" x 8.5" to 24" x 30", of various alumni, campus buildings, and the statue of Lord Botetourt, including views of the removal of the statue and its move to Swem Library.

Acc. 1994.060 includes photographs from the College's yearbook, the Colonial Echo from circa 1988-1992.

Acc. 1997.001 is photographs, contact sheets, and negatives used in publications like the Colonial Echo, William and Mary News, and Alumni Gazette. The images include scenes of college life, buildings, events, and people transferred from University Relations.

Acc. 1999.082 is 5 boxes of negatives from the Colonial Echo (1953-1959), Chandler's Cradle of the Republic, The Flat Hat (1950-1953), and others.

Acc. 2007.043 included approximately 32 black and white photographs of art exhibitions at the former Phi Beta Kappa (present-day Ewell) Hall as well as stage sets from the late 1930s-early 1940s. Leslie Cheek was involved with many of these works.

Acc. 2007.057 includes photographs and slides documenting College administrators, faculty, students, alumni, events, buildings, and related material from University Relations. These photographs have been arranged by subject heading. This group of slides is inventoried in the box list portion of this finding aid (see below for link).

Acc. 2009.544 contains photographs photographs related to the College of William and Mary from circa 1700s to 2005. Included in the campus are photographs from Swem Library's renovation from 1999-2005, photographs of campus events including Commencement, and photographs of buildings on campus, the Wren Building in particular.

Acc. 2009.552: The bulk of the files contain photos of Swem Library from around 1999 to 2005. Also included are issues of the Swem Library newsletter, The Throne; photographs of Chancellor Sandra Day O'Connor at Swem Library in 2004; and images from the University Archives featuring the Old Library in Tucker Hall in 1919 as well as Swem Library from 1966.

Acc. 2009.553 contains photographs mostly from the Swem Library renovation from 1999 to 2005. Included are images of progress over time in various locations of the library including Circulation, Reference, and Special Collections. Also included are images from College buildings as well as aerial views of campus.
